During the recent Visionaries of Uganda Awards ceremony at the Kampala Serena Hotel, the importance of these awards was emphasized. Vice-President Edward Ssekandi, the guest of honor, highlighted that by acknowledging and rewarding excellence, the awards promote the development of high-quality products, services, and healthy competition, which are fundamental pillars of socio-economic progress.

Ssekandi noted, “This ceremony arrives at a crucial juncture where local producers and service providers must compare their offerings with those of global counterparts. Therefore, the essence of this event underscores the imperative of prioritizing quality products and services in a fiercely competitive global landscape.”

Job Mwesigwa, the team leader of the award organizers, emphasized in an interview, “Ensuring proper accountability of funds within government institutions will facilitate the execution of initiatives aimed at propelling the country toward middle-income status by 2040. Each year, substantial sums are allocated to government institutions, necessitating the realization of tangible outcomes. Hence, we conduct on-site assessments to evaluate their achievements,” he added, underscoring the initiative’s result-oriented approach. Research and surveys are conducted in collaboration with the National Planning Authority (NPA), a key partner in the initiative’s implementation. Mwesigwa further explained that prior to the awards ceremony, both the private sector and government agencies showcased their work.

He emphasized that in addition to market performance, they also evaluate the corporate social responsibility efforts of private companies. Ssekandi stressed the importance of Uganda having organizations and individuals with an entrepreneurial mindset that is market-oriented and capable of meeting the needs of both the people and the economy.

The annual initiative, launched in 2012 by President Yoweri Museveni, focuses on sectors identified as key drivers for realizing Vision 2040. Among these sectors, agriculture stands out due to its potential for generating increased production and value addition, thus paving the way for the emergence of smaller industries in processing and the establishment of industrial hubs.

UNIFREIGHT CARGO HANDLING LIMITED received recognition as the best visionary CLEARING & FORWARDING COMPANY 2018 from the citizens of the Republic of Uganda for its exceptional contribution towards Uganda’s middle-income status aspirations and Vision 2040.
